The only difference between animal and human is that animal has need and human have desire besides need. Need has biological root and can be satisfied after being fulfilled. On contrary, desire does not have any object, to be reached. Man desires the desire of the others, he wants to be recognized. In particular he wants to be recognized as a human being, that is as a being with certain worth or dignity. Man sacrifices his life--- defying the biological instinct of self-preservation--- for the sake of higher, abstract principle.
